One couple gives back with their love for special education

Never far from campus, Atchison residents Edward and Marlene Gellings sent a daughter, Kathy ’80, to Benedictine College and often attend Raven football games, basketball games and many of our music and theatre performances. Although the Gellings now have 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, they’ve still found the time and resources to establish a scholarship to help deserving students train in special education.

It’s clear the couple recognizes the importance of learning. No matter what a person’s ability, the Gellings have always had a heart for helping people with special needs and disabilities maximize their potential. Many individuals with disabilities simply aren’t given much of a chance to get an education and live as independently as possible.

When you look at the personal history of Ed and Marlene, they could have chosen any number of areas to support. After marrying in 1957 at Sacred Heart Church in Atchison, they traveled the world during Ed’s 22-year career with the United State Air Force. Ed flew F-100 airplanes for most of his career, later becoming an instructor pilot—and he continued to fly commercially after he and Marlene moved back to Atchison.

Marlene graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri, and qualified as a Registered Nurse—using her experience in Girl and Boy Scout camps and community and school health screenings.

It is inspiring see supporters like the Gellings choose how they wish to help the college, and pursue their own philanthropic goals! No matter where your talents lie or what you’re passionate about, when it comes to furthering education, we are honored to help supporters who are considering gifts of any amount find a way to achieve their own goals.

Maybe you feel like the Gellings do. If you have a personal desire to achieve your own philanthropic goals with a gift to benefit future generations of Benedictine students, I hope you’ll reach out to us so that we can work together to achieve your goals.
